Samuel Leopold

Samuel Leopold

Biography

Samuel Leopold grew up along the banks of the Mississippi in New Orleans and was introduced to painting in oils at age nine. As a teenager, Leopold debuted at the Gasperi Gallery and also represented his congressional district in the 6th Annual Congressional Art Competition, exhibiting at the U.S. Capitol Building. Throughout his twenties and thirties, Leopold showed at galleries, contended in contests, and became part of a variety of collections. International acclaim came to him as a finalist in the Hyogo International Competition of Painting at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe, Japan. Leopold continues to exhibit his work in galleries, competitions, and private events across the country and around the world. He now lives in semi-rural Indiana with his family of muses and critics.

Artist Statement

“Architectural ideas and spatial experiments live in my work. From fictional skylines to whimsical structures, I express the unique human condition of carving spaces.

Through the medium of oils, using the three genres of landscape, surreal, and abstract, I convey my ideas. Those ideas often contain architectural designs that frequently exist only as concepts, universal and personal symbolism, and exaggerated coloring.

A painted cutout that is integrated around some of my works has become a developing trademark. It is part of my underlying belief that every work should be a total composition and that I should leave no part of the canvas untouched.”
